Thursday, February 24, 2011 at 7:30 p.m.

Please join the Al Henderson / Kirk MacDonald Duo Thursday, February 24th at 7:30 p.m. in celebration of Black History Month for an evening of wonderful music and commentary on jazz history.  Al and Kirk will venture from their duo format of performing jazz standards and their original compositions by performing important compositions from Great Jazz Musicians and will comment on their historical context.

Al has more than thirty years of experience teaching and performing jazz and is an Assistant Professor at York University.  His areas of research include jazz composition, performance and theory with a special interest in jazz history.  Al directs the York University Jazz Orchestra with Ron Westray, the Oscar Peterson Chair in Jazz Performance endowed by the Government of Ontario in 2009.  Al arranges many of the orchestra’s pieces drawing on the rich history of jazz composers and performers from Coleman Hawkins and Duke Ellington to Thelonious Monk and Sonny Rollins.

Kirk also has numerous years of experience teaching and performing and is part of the full-time faculty at Humber College, just west of The Gallery Studio Café on the Lake Shore.  Kirk, a previous JUNO award winner has just received yet another 2011 JUNO nomination for his CD “Songbook Vol. 2″.  For more information, please check out www.kirkmacdonald.com
